Tabernanthe iboga är en buske som blir 1 - 2 meter hög och växer i undervegetationen i tropiska skogar i Västra Afrika (Gabon, Kamerun, Kongo, etc) , men odlas även av de infödda. Busken innehåller en illaluktande vit latex. Bladen är ovala och ofta ca 10cm långa, 3cm breda. De små blommorna är gulaktiga, rosa eller med vita och rosa fläckar och växer i grupper om 5-12 blommor. De ovala frukterna är gula/orange, växer i par och blir stora som oliver. Fröna förlorar grobarheten väldigt snabbt och får inte torka ut.

Tabernanthe iboga innehåller flera indolalkaloider, varav den dominerande är ibogain. Det är framför allt den gula roten eller rotbarken som används traditionellt. Alkaloidkoncentrationen i hela rötter är upp till 2.5% och upp till 6% i enbart rotbarken (Källa: 1)

"The present investigation of Tabernanthe iboga root records the isolation of twelve compounds, which includes not only the four known alkaloids ibogamine, ibogaine, tabernanthine and iboluteine but also iboquine, desmethoxyiboluteine, the hydroxyindolenine derivatives of ibogaine and ibogamine, voacangine, gabonine, kisantine and kimvuline.
